Using the Word as a Hammer

I've been insisting for the past thirty-odd years that we must pound on sickness, temptation, weakness and the evil spirits behind them. Thereís no room for bashfulness, uncertainty, or even politeness in dealing with the devil. We need to be clear that spiritual warfare is warfare!

How, then, do we pound on the adversary and his works? With the hammer of the Word of God! Jeremiah 23:29 (Amplified) brings the picture into focus: "Is not My word like fire...says the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks in pieces the rock [of most stubborn resistance]?"

Countless prayer victories

The answer, of course, is "yes," and the truth of Jeremiahís witness has been realized in countless prayer victories. The Word of God contains the power of God, and even "the rock of most stubborn resistance" will shatter into pieces under its pressure.

When Christians have to deal with a stubbornly resistant "rock"--a prayer obstacle that shows no sign of yielding--thereís almost always an unseen force behind it. Consider Ephesians 6:12 (Amplified): "For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood...but... against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere."

The Spirit will be beside you

If youíve been praying aloud the healing Scriptures but your healing hasn't "arrived," itís time to hammer those spirit forces--those demons, in plain English--with the Word of God. Here are a few thoughts on how to go about it. Letís say your "rock of most stubborn resistance" is depression.

First, make sure youíve checked things out with the Holy Spirit. Get quiet, take time in His presence, and ask Him exactly what to pray, how to pray, and for guidance on whatever else you need to know. Take courage from Romans 8:26, the promise that the Spirit will be doing battle right beside you.

Second, know for a certainty that youíve been given the power and authority to forbid attacks on your mind. Use that power! Matthew 18:18: "Truly...whatever you forbid and declare to be improper and unlawful on earth... is already forbidden in heaven...."

     Go on the offensive

Third, go on the offensive. You can pray something like this: "Demons behind this depression, I take authority over you in the Name of Jesus. In His Name and by His power, I bind you up and cast you out of my mind. Brain, you will work properly. All your functions are designed by the Lord, and you are healed by His power. Amen and amen!"

And keep it up until the hammer of Godís Word has broken that depression--or any other "rock of most stubborn resistance"--in pieces.
