MGHM Healing Brief, 3/14

About God's Timing

"If God really wants people healed, why doesn’t He just heal them and be done with it?" We’ve heard the question dozens of times in one form or another: why doesn’t God just "zap" us?

Well, why not? Because the god of this world has to be dealt with. We’re not living in Toyland but in a spiritual war-zone. As the Lord’s agents on earth it’s our job to crush the enemy with the Word. We have the legal authority to do it, but the devil has a legal right to test us. And if we don’t do our job . . . look around you for the results.

A problem at a time

The point I want to make is that God has solid practical motives for healing our defects gradually and in a particular order. One obvious reason is that He refuses to make us comfortable in a way that locks us into spiritual infancy. God won’t work against Himself by babying us.

But a less obvious reason is that demons lurk behind our infirmities. If the Lord delivered us from everything at once we wouldn’t be able to keep up with the enemy’s counterattacks. That’s why, even when we’re full of the Word and our sins are forgiven, God will likely heal a problem at a time instead of wiping out our arthritis, our depression, and our sinus trouble in one fell swoop.

Because our healing depends on it

And even so, the devil will try to bulldoze our faith, because our healing depends on it. He may be a complete fool in some ways, but he’s good at making unbelief seem sweetly reasonable. You’ve heard his pious-sounding bunk many times: Are you sure you should be reading the Bible when your children need help with their lessons? Aren’t you putting God to the test with your prayers? You know you’re missing your favorite soap-opera. Are you sure it’s God’s sovereign will to cure your hemorrhoids? Couldn’t they be His way of teaching you something?

Sadly, these attacks succeed far too often, and many of us give up without much resistance: "It’s not working. I must be doing something wrong. Maybe God doesn’t want to heal me after all." If the enemy senses that you’re leaning in this direction, he’ll ramp up his attacks until your faith collapses.

Stand your ground

The solution? Aggressive, single-minded, bull-headed determination to stand your ground, (a) no matter how long it takes, (b) no matter how "religious" the devil’s prattle may seem, (c) no matter that he tries every five minutes to swamp you in discouragement and despair, (d) no matter how grim the doctor’s diagnosis, (e) no matter how much you’d like to give up.

In short, as we’ve said many times, just "hang in there." The Holy Spirit will help you (see Romans 8:26). Keep speaking the healing scriptures aloud whenever your trouble comes to mind. Swat unbelief as if you were swatting a fly. Turn your attention away from the problem and toward the solution. Keep thanking the Lord that His power is at work in you. And when your healing has manifested, just praise Him for being the best of all possible Fathers, always ready to heal, deliver, and protect His children.

Don't forget that . . .

God should be our first resort, not our last resort. Start taking time right now to build up the faith you need to receive His healing.

God is ready to heal us in every wayspiritually, physically, emotionally, and mentally.

God heals all types of disease, pain, sorrow, and infirmity. Nothing is too hard for Him.

God wants us to be healed, to be "whole" persons enjoying abundant life.

God expects us to cooperate with Him in getting healedthrough medicine, diet, exercise, and straight thinking. Everything that promotes healing is a gift from Him.
