MGHM Healing Brief, 6/09

We Are Already Healed

According to Scripture, the people of God are already healed. This simple truth has been obscured by centuries' worth of pious nonsense, such as the traditional misunderstanding of Paul's thorn (not a disease!), and the appalling notion that God "teaches us something" by making us ill.

But in Bible verse after verse, our healing is presented as an accomplished fact. Isaiah asserts that the Messiah has borne our sickness. Matthew teaches that He took our infirmities. First Peter is clear that with His stripes we are healed. Over the centuries Christians have gotten used to pleading with God for healing--but why are we pleading with Him to do what He's already done?

The challenge we face

At this point in the discussion, the standard question is, "If God has healed us, why are so many Christians sick?" The answer, I suggest, is that most Christians have no idea how to connect with the healing power of God.

The challenge we face, then, is not how to squeeze healing out of God, but how to receive the gift of healing that He's already given.

First, we need to understand clearly that the Lord has assigned us the authority, and the responsibility, to command the result we need. In dealing with sickness, it's our job to release God's power by speaking His Word against the problem and against any evil spirits behind it.

Stay plugged into the power

Second, once we're clear about our authority, we need to actually speak the healing Word. This will serve the twofold purpose of activating our faith for healing and releasing the power of God to heal.

Third, we need to hang in there. Healing is a process that follows certain spiritual laws. Our part in the process is to stay plugged into the power of God until the healing is complete. We do this by standing firmly on our covenant with God and speaking the Word until the permanent truth of our healing has driven out the temporary symptoms of disease.

Invite the Holy Spirit

Which Word? Well, chances are you know the basics by heart: Isaiah 53:4-5; Matthew 8:16-17; 1 Peter 2:24. Other power-packed Scriptures are Mark 11:23 on the moving of mountains, Galatians 3:13 on our redemption from the curse of the Law, and James 5:15 on the prayer of faith.

Use Bible verses that "come alive" for you. Invite the Holy Spirit to point out verses to use. Add your own expressions of faith. And above all, know beyond the shadow of a doubt that when you command what Jesus' sacrifice has paid for, the healing power of heaven is flowing through the words you speak.

Don't forget that . . .

God should be our first resort, not our last resort. Start taking time right now to build up the faith you need to receive His healing.

God is ready to heal us in every wayspiritually, physically, emotionally, and mentally.

God heals all types of disease, pain, sorrow, and infirmity. Nothing is too hard for Him.

God wants us to be healed, to be "whole" persons enjoying abundant life.

God expects us to cooperate with Him in getting healedthrough medicine, diet, exercise, and straight thinking. Everything that promotes healing is a gift from Him.
