|Recently I've been
hammering on the deadly passivity of so much modern
religion--"You never know what God's going to do,"
and so on. The short-term reward for this attitude is that
it's easy. "Blessed are they who expect
nothing in particular, for they shall have it."
But since Christians are subject to every kind of abuse
in a world still dominated by our enemy, the price of
short-term ease can be long-term anguish. That's why I'm
going to insist again (and again and again in the future) that
the Body of Christ needs to take authority over sin,
sickness, and infirmity.
For centuries the Body has been collectively lying down
on the job, either folding our hands and expecting nothing,
or hoping that a miracle worker or God Himself will get the
job done for us. The effect is that our passivity has given
the devil permission to run over us like a Mack truck.
sin, every sickness
But the truth is that every Christian already
has the power and authority to deal with whatever comes
against us--every sin, every sickness, every kind of
infirmity or weakness. Ephesians 1:19-23 (NIV) exults in
"the riches of [Jesusí] glorious inheritance in the
. . . his incomparably great power for us who believe.
That power is like the working of his mighty strength . . .
far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and
every title that can be given, not only in the present age
but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under
his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for
the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills
everything in every way.
the works of the enemy
And how do we know that these riches are ours to
use in delivering Christís Body from all the works of the
enemy? From texts such as Luke 10:19 (Amplified), among many
Behold! I have given you authority and power to trample
upon serpents and scorpions [demons], and . . . over all the
power [of] the enemy . . . and nothing shall in any way harm
Of course, as soon as you decide to attack any problem
with the power of God, a chorus of sweetly reasonable voices
will urge you to get back in line: Do you really believe
that mere words can heal cancer? How can you expect to
change conditions that the medical profession considers
untreatable? Isnít your interpretation of Scripture a
little extreme? You donít want to presume on Godís
sovereignty, do you? After all, His ways are not our ways. .
form of oppression
But the Spirit Himself will help you "hang in
there" (Romans 8:26), because the unchangeable
Scriptural fact is that God has sovereignly shown
us His way to deal with every form of
oppression. We take authority. We stand our ground. We thank
our Lord that He has already given us the victory!
