Much Faith Is Enough?
|Thereís a widespread
notion in the Church that we must have a certain quantity
of faith to be healed. Christians often inspect themselves
for signs of sufficient faith and then decide they donít
have enough to do the job. But though faith can be strong or
weak, it isnít something that can be put in a measuring
cup. What matters is what you do with the faith
Single-mindedness is the ticket. Consider this:
Then Jesus answered and said, "O faithless and
perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long
shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me." And Jesus
rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was
cured. . . .
as a mustard seed
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and
said, "Why could we not cast it out?" So Jesus
said to them, "Because of your unbelief [little faith];
for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard
seed, you will say to this mountain, ĎMove from here to
there,í and it will move; and nothing will be impossible
for you (Matthew 17:17-20).
In the original Greek, Matthew 17:20 reads "little
faith" rather than "unbelief," but the
problem is plainly the feebleness of the disciplesí faith,
not the quantity. After calling them "faithless,"
Jesus goes on to show what can done when youíve got just
enough real faith to throw off your doubts and go for the
wholeness Jesus wants you to have
Of course the mountain in this text is not a
literal pile of stone, but a symbol for the satanic torments
in your life. If youíve been tracking these Briefs from
month to month, youíll know that "your" sin,
sickness, depression, empty pockets, sour relationships, and
other troubles donít belong to you in Christ Jesus. They
belong to the devil, and to the devil they must go.
How do you get rid of them? Follow the Bibleís
directions and speak to them. Speak to the
"mountain" in your life until it moves. Donít be
bashful about enforcing the Law of God against the lawless
If, for example, youíve got a mountain of depression
standing between you and the wholeness Jesus wants you to
have, you can talk to it like this:
for the gusto
"Depression, get out of my brain. Get out of
my spirit, in the Name of Jesus. Thank you, Father, that the
Name of Jesus is infinitely more than enough to drive away
this depression." Repeat as necessary--calmly,
insistently, faith-fully--and keep expecting
the result that you and God both want.
Certainly itís a marvelous thing to be a giant of
faith, but you only need faith "as a mustard seed"
to do what Jesus teaches here. So quit worrying and follow
directions. Just get into the Word, soak yourself in it,
preach it to your spirit, and go for the gusto. Donít let
the devil bully you into measuring your faith against some
imaginary standard. If youíve got enough to keep moving
single-mindedly in the right direction, youíve got enough.
