Halfway to Wholeness

The startling thesis of a recent book by Adelle LaBrec is that we can override the destructive DNA we were born with, by correcting what we think and say, along with lifestyle and dietary improvements. The book is How to Reprogram Your DNA for Optimum Health. It discusses "an exciting field of genetic science called . . . epigenetics," and the claim is that we can change our genes as easily as we change our clothes.

LaBrec, a writer on medical subjects, quotes extensively from academic sources. An example is Dr. Bruce Lipton (PhD in developmental biology from the University of Virginia), who argues that our thoughts, attitudes and perceptions are the true keys to wellness, because "genes are not controlling the life of your cells, your mind is."

Catching up with the Word

Dr. David Rakel, of the University of Wisconsin medical faculty, is quoted thus: "Research is telling us even if your family has a history of cancer, there are things you can do to bathe that gene in a way to keep it from expressing itself. We have a choice to bathe our genes with joy, happiness, exercise and nutritious foods . . . [and] the choices we make [will] show up at a cellular level."

In short, what we think and say is what we get! Although itís likely that mainstream scientists will be pooh-poohing the LaBrec-Lipton-Rakel thesis for decades to come, itís still encouraging to read that science may be catching up with the Word. Unfortunately, LaBrecís book leaves God out of the picture almost entirely. Her message seems to be that we can revamp our cellular life on our own.

A Power that goes beyond science

Most of us know from experience, though, that spiritual and mental bootstrap-lifting is a disaster waiting to happen. As in most areas of life, secular wisdom will carry us halfway to wholeness, but itís still incomplete wisdom. Past a certain point―especially if weíre sick with something the medical profession hasnít been able to fix―weíre going to need a Power that goes beyond science.

Just now Iím thinking of Scott, completely smashed in a car accident, restored by a few surgeries and serious prayer; of Marilyn, rescued in one evening from chronic paralyzing fear; of Don, and the single prayer that delivered him from back pain and numbness in one of his arms. In these cases and countless others in the history of this ministry, Godís power took over and carried the project to completion when secular remedies "ran out of gas."

Transformed by the renewing of your mind

Romans 12:2 has been telling us for twenty centuries, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Godís will isóhis good, pleasing and perfect will."

And Mark 11:24 assures us, "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."

Dear ones, if weíll just combine those two texts and release our faith accordingly, weíll have  complete access to the wholeness that science is reaching for.
