Complete Well-Being

When the Bible mentions "peace," weíre apt to think of something like "the absence of war." But the Hebrew word shalom, which translates as "peace" in English, actually means much more than universal disarmament. Its real sense is completeness, wholeness, well-being, health, soundness, prosperity--everything covered by Jesusí prayer that the will of God might be done on earth as itís done in heaven.

All these things are available to us in this life, through the work of Christ on the Cross. Isaiah writes (53:5) about the Satan-inflicted torments endured by our Lord as the ultimate test of His free obedience to the will of God. That was "the punishment needful to obtain our shalom."

"Tidings of great joy"

But the Good News weíll be celebrating between Christmas and Easter, and forever after, is that Jesus triumphed over the devil by being faithful "unto death." He died, and rose, and lives eternally at the right hand of God and in each of us. These are the "tidings of great joy" weíve been singing about in recent weeks.

Adam and Eve opened the door to the god of this world; Jesus shut the door in his face. Galatians 3:13 makes it clear that our enemy has lost the authority to saddle us with sickness, mental torments, self-destructive habits, or any other fallout from what the Bible calls the Curse.

Provided we do our part

Now, it hardly needs to be said that wholeness isnít automatic. God wonít overrule our freedom in order to bless us, and he wonít bless our disobedience, so we have a part to play in receiving what He longs to give--whether itís spiritual rebirth, forgiveness, healing, deliverance, or any other benefit of Jesusí sacrifice.

But complete shalom is ours to enjoy, right under the devilís nose--provided we do our part by embracing Jesus Christ, living under His blood-covering, and speaking the Word that opens the door to His blessings.

So letís activate our faith this Christmas season--and not just at Christmas and Easter, but all through the New Year! Letís believe that Jesus has already undone the works of the devil! Letís know beyond the shadow of a doubt that Christís victory is already ours, and that by speaking the truth of that victory, we win the battle!

Solid in our conviction

Letís turn to the Lord and assure Him of our commitment to His Holy Word! Letís confess our faith that Heíll produce shalom in the lives of His children! Letís be solid in our conviction that weíre receiving the wholeness, completeness, well-being, health, and prosperity that the Lord wills for us!

And above all, letís offer our best thanks for the sacrifice of His dear Son, the ultimate Christmas gift to the people of God!
