On Earth as in Heaven, Part 1

"Perfect everything" is Rufus Moseleyís summary of what God has done for us in the saving sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The present season of "blessings all around" is an ideal time to realize the height and breadth of Godís gift: rescue from destructive behaviors and attitudes; rescue from sickness, weakness, distress, sorrow, and pain; rescue from every filthy work of the devil--in a word, shalom, wholeness, on earth as in heaven.

"How beautiful on the mountains," Isaiah writes (52:7), "are the feet of him who brings good news, proclaiming shalom. . . ." The glossary of The Complete Jewish Bible defines it as peace, safety, well-being, welfare, health, contentment, success, comfort, wholeness and integrity. Shalom is health, healing, and so much more: completeness, complete life, complete living.

And by the grace of God itís ours!

                            The weight of dead tradition

Does the Church at large know how to receive this grace? The answer must be "no." For too many of us, the idea that God wants "perfect everything" for His children seems like a daydream. Most of us have been saturated with the powerless suffering-and-testing theology that infected the Western Church after the early Middle Ages.

Iíve often mentioned my own struggle to throw off the weight of dead tradition that kept me more or less helpless in the face of evil. Most of us have been in the same position, and too many are still there. Weíve been taught from the cradle upward that God moves in mysterious ways, that every imaginable nuisance is a "gift" to build our character, that our diseases are ways in which we share the suffering of Jesus.

                                The triumph of heaven

Most of us have wrestled with well-meant but deadly interpretations of Paulís thorn and the "chastening of the Lord," as well as the misunderstood need to rejoice in our trials (we do that to turn them against the devil, for heavenís sake, not to celebrate them). Christians have actually been driven out of the Faith by the teaching that every disaster we face has passed through the loving hands of God and carries His seal of approval.

Dear ones, at the close of 2011 the task facing you and me and this ministry is straightforward: to pray and work for the triumph of heaven on earth, and nothing less! As we move from one year to the next, letís make up our minds that enjoying and sharing shalom in all its glory is what weíre called to do.

Our mission on earth

The age is evil, so "perfect everything" will be "perfectly" ours only when we stand in the Presence of God eternally. But meanwhile we can grow in Godís truth and share it with everyone around us. Itís the beginning of wholeness for all who will listen. And our mission on earth will be fulfilled again and again as ordinary people, one by one, make the life-changing decision to reach for Godís gift and take hold of it, and experience for themselves the blessings of shalom for the very first time.

Don't forget that . . .

God should be our first resort, not our last resort. Start taking time right now to build up the faith you need to receive His healing.

God is ready to heal us in every wayóspiritually, physically, emotionally, and mentally.

God heals all types of disease, pain, sorrow, and infirmity. Nothing is too hard for Him.

God wants us to be healed, to be "whole" persons enjoying abundant life.

God expects us to cooperate with Him in getting healedóthrough medicine, diet, exercise, and straight thinking. Everything that promotes healing is a gift from Him.
